Uses: Outlining, straight and curved lines, stems for trees, rows to be filled when stitched together closely. Makes a look-like rope.
- Work from left to right.
- Bring the needle up to 1 and down to 2.
- Bring the needle up half way between 1 and 2, slightly above the first stitch.
- Be sure to keep the thread underneath the needle.
- Continue sewing
Tip:
- Make small stitches for curved lines to maintain a smooth smooth round appearance.
Chain stitch
Uses: Outline straight lines and curved lines, filling if the rows are stitched closely together.
- Work from top to bottom.
- Bring the needle to 1 and then make a loop and re-insert the needle into the same hole.
- Drag the index to 2 and draw the loop until the desired shape is achieved.
- Repeat multiple stitches to create a chain.
- To finish the row, make a short stitch on the last loop to secure the back thread.
Tip: It is important to keep your thread tense even to create a coherent look chain.
Couching
Uses: Outline shapes, straight and curved lines, spirals, bold bold accents, decorative borders.
This stitch involves two threads: a dense foundation thread, (also called thread thread) and a thin thread (called a caching thread).
- Place the foundation thread on the front and along the design line.
- Bring the caching thread underneath the foundation thread and make a small stitch on the thread by going back to the entrance hole or very close.
- Continue stitching evenly spaced over the foundation thread to anchor the thread in place of the foundation.
- To finish the couch, bring the base thread back and secure it.
- Safe caching thread on the back.
Tip:
- Use a matching color thread or contrast color for caching stitches to mix for bold colors.
- Use DMC Cotton Thread (1 strand) to keep solid colored foundation threads low and use a strand of DMC Light Effects thread to minimize dense metallic foundation threads.
