12. Needlework Terminology: Surface Embroidery
Three Main Arrangements...

Frequently, in the needlework world, we distinguish among three main types of ornamental needlework on a ground of some sort using needle and filament, that vigorous their own general classification. These would be the following:

1. Surface embroidery

2. Count  work

3. Needlepoint or canvas work

Needlepoint is worked on canvas. Traditionally, needlepoint employed principally the tent stitch (or some distinction there of), but now it frequently incorporate other stitches, too – not just canvas work stitches (of which they are many), but also, from time to time, ornamental embroidery stitches. Usually, needlepoint is also a counted technique or it involves a painted or drawn canvas.

Count work – counted cross stitch, counted black work, and even Hard anger and alike counted filament embroidery technique – rely on (usually) an even- interlace fabric, and they normally employ a limited collection of stitches, depending on the technique. However, as tastes and style change, as technique progress, other type of stitches have become part of counted techniques. It’s not extraordinary to see counted cross stitch that involve French knots, stem stitch, satin stitch, and more. Or a Hard anger design with a bottom in Hard anger techniques, but with bullion roses and what not veining through the Hard resentment prototype. These stitches, which are normally surface embroidery stitches, can cross over into count work as well.
